HÖRMANN Automotive helping to reshape agriculture amidst changes in technology

The scale of the changes to agriculture over the last hundred years is impressive. At the turn of the 20th century, when Germany was still largely an agrarian society, around 38% of the labour force worked in farming and forestry, and one farmer could feed around four people. Today, that first figure is just 1.8%, and one farmer feeds 135 people on average. ‘This enormous advance in productivity could not have been possible without the use of ever more efficient machinery, and that still applies today,’ said Uwe Jung, managing director of HÖRMANN Automotive in Saarbrücken and St. Wendel. One pivotal factor in production is the forage harvester. First developed in the 1940s, it is one of the most recent items of high-performance agricultural machinery.

HÖRMANN Digital implements new BugJack ticketing tool

Early in 2020, HÖRMANN Digital assembled its first development team, which realised its first project later that same year. This was BugJack, an innovative ticketing tool that has arisen out of a collaboration with HÖRMANN Logistik. The tool is designed to help handle bug reports at customers’ logistics centres. Previously, when a bug report came in, customers would call the service provider. Only then would the error be fixed, usually requiring a site visit by an employee from the service provider. BugJack offers the option to use intuitive and digital methods to report bugs quickly and easily, provide clear tracking of the bug-fixing process and produce documentation that can then be used to help deal with future errors. BugJack is also the basis for further digitalisation of the service process and the integration of additional functions such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

HÖRMANN Industries publishes annual financial statements for 2020

HÖRMANN Industries GmbH (corporate bond, WKN: A2TSCH) today published its 2020 annual financial statements. While the Group’s start to the year went according to plan, its business activities were materially affected from mid-March onwards, particularly in the Automotive and Services divisions, by the spread of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus, the associated restrictions on public life and the large-scale shutdown of production capacities in the automotive industry. The HÖRMANN Group’s sales in the 2020 financial year amounted to EUR 521.5 million (previous year: EUR 622.2 million). This decline in sales is attributable to the Automotive and Services divisions, whereas the Engineering division was able to keep sales at the prior year level and the Communication division increased its sales compared to the previous year in the crisis year 2020. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) came to EUR 25.5 million (previous year: EUR 35.6 million), while earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) amounted to EUR 12.6 million (previous year: EUR 23.7 million). At EUR 18.9 million, adjusted EBIT including non-recurring effects of EUR 5.8 million resulting from the relocation of the automotive plant in Penzberg and extraordinary goodwill amortisation in the Services division in the amount of EUR 0.5 million was only slightly below plan.

HÖRMANN Group helping to work on solution for intermodal logistics in urban settings

Cities are dynamic ecosystems in which transport has a significant impact on quality of life. If the latter is to be not only maintained but also improved, it will be necessary to make adjustments to urban transport as soon as possible and offer adequate solutions to an array of challenges. These include an ever-growing population, particularly in major cities; rising levels of CO2 and particulates; outdated transport infrastructure; high noise levels; and severely limited useable space. ‘Last-mile’ logistics is incredibly important in this respect.

HÖRMANN Group publishes preliminary figures for the 2016 financial year

HÖRMANN Industries GmbH (formerly HÖRMANN Finance GmbH; German Securities Code Number (WKN) of corporate bond: A2AAZG) has presented its preliminary figures for the past financial year. The Group, which incorporates the operating subsidiaries of the HÖRMANN Group and had around 2,800 employees in the 2016 financial year, generated consolidated sales of EUR 464.6 million (previous year: EUR 435.4 million) and EBIT of EUR 16.9 million (previous year: EUR 11.9 million). Consolidated income after interest and taxes amounted to around EUR 11 million (previous year: EUR 6.2 million). This meant the medium-sized conglomerate achieved substantially higher sales and earnings growth than originally forecast. This was mainly due to the pro rata sales and earnings contributions from the first-time consolidation of Funkwerk AG and VacuTec Messtechnik GmbH in the fourth quarter of 2016 and higher than expected organic growth in the Automotive and Engineering segments.

HÖRMANN Finance GmbH (corporate bond, German Securities Code Number (WKN): A2AAZG) is changing its name to HÖRMANN Industries GmbH. Only last year, the technology specialist expanded its investment portfolio to more than 20 subsidiaries by acquiring majority holdings in Funkwerk AG, a listed company, and VacuTec Messtechnik GmbH. The new name also reflects the diversified product portfolio of the equity investments. The medium-sized conglomerate offers a varied range of products in different sectors across its Automotive, Engineering and Communication segments. In the 2015 financial year, it generated consolidated sales of around EUR 435 million, operating EBIT of EUR 11.9 million and consolidated net income after taxes of EUR 6.2 million with a workforce of around 2,300 employees. The Group intends to further extend its strong technological position in the coming years through targeted investments and systematically expand its international activities.

The new integral chassis concept for lightweight commercial vehicles from HÖRMANN Automotive GmbH features an oval topology reminiscent of a nut or a tortoise, making it safe and yet light at the same time for its application protecting the energy storage unit. In terms of manufacturing technology, the concept builds on the findings of the Technical University of Darmstadt’s Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 666, a project dealing with integral sheet metal design with higher-order bifurcations and the development, production and analysis of such products. This uses the technologies developed as part of the project in a vehicle manufacturing application for the future of urban delivery logistics. It uses the bifurcated sheet structures to implement new mechanisms for protecting energy storage units in vehicles with alternative drive systems.

Light commercial vehicles can vary widely owing to the extremely broad range of applications for which they are used, which currently means costly conversion processes requiring a lot of tools. In addition, mass-produced electric light commercial vehicles are often based on conventional platforms designed for internal combustion engines. This wastes precious space because these vehicles are not systematically designed with the use of alternative drive systems in mind.
